On behalf of the Birgu Local Council, I would like to welcome you to the official website of Malta’s oldest Maritime Capital, the City of Birgu. This ancient, medieval City, long ago battered and besieged by the might of opposing powers suffered another bitter siege in World War II, which laid it once again in ruins. Like the mythological phoenix , through the resilience of its citizens, Birgu rose from its ashes to emerge defiantly as a City of art and culture.
